Thus says the Lord: "Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.
But they said, 'We will not walk in it.'" --Jeremiah 6:16

Puritan Reading Challenge for Old Truth Readers

Forget all of those silly New Years resolutions in which you promise to do things like use that treadmill that you bought eight years ago. Here's a better plan for 2008, one that you might actually follow-through with. Certainly if you do follow-through with it, with the Holy Spirit's help - your knowledge of the Lord Jesus will increase by leaps and bounds. What's more, by participating in this program, you'll qualify for some deals and maybe even some free-bees of some of the best Christian books ever written. There's no catch, nothing to loose (except for the price of the books you buy), and if you are a regular Old Truth reader there's even more reason to participate. Here's what it's all about.

Timmy Brister, who blogs with me over at StrangeBaptistFire.com, has come up with a great idea that's really catching on around the blogosphere. It's a plan that includes reading one Puritan Paperback every month, so that after a year you'll have read . . . well you do the math:-) If you participate in this program, you can take advantage of some discounts on some great Puritan books. It's free to enroll; to sign up - just visit Timmy Brister's blog:

Join the 2008 Puritan Reading Challenge!

I am so in favor of this reading plan that I've decided to throw in some incentives that are especially geared towards Old Truth readers who are less familiar with the Puritan's writings. To qualify for the additional Old Truth incentives, you must . . .

  • Post a comment below in the months of January or February 2008 stating that "you are in".
  • Only those who have already read less than four Puritan Paperbacks thus far will qualify. If you have never read any, that's even more ideal. I admit it, my goal in this is to get you hooked on the Puritans.
  • Only those who have posted a comment on Old Truth prior to 2008 will qualify. That's how I'm going to distinguish "an Old Truth reader". If you have clinical comment-phobia and are instead a consistent lurker on Old Truth, we will make an exception for you.
  • Post a comment here or email me when you complete your last book in the program.

The first five people who finish all of that will receive from me a care package that will contain some combination of free - books, DVDs, and sermon CD's that I put together for you. I'm not going to reveal what they are ahead of time, but suffice it to say, it will NOT include any contemporary Christian fluff.

By the way, how many teeth do you suspect we'd have to pull to get folks like Joel Osteen, Rick Warren, and the TBN crew to participate in this reading program? I can hardly think of anything that would do them more good. Compared to today's brand of evangelicalism, the Puritan Paperbacks seem like an entirely different religion.

Keep an eye on Timmy's blog in 2008, as well as Old Truth, for more write-ups and excerpts on the Puritan Paperbacks. Chad and I both love these books; our church keeps a large supply of them for sale on our bookshelves. They may not be as easy to read as The Best Purposes Now and 101 Jabez Self Esteem Tips, but the Puritan's writings are always bathed in scripture, and are Christ-focused to a degree you will rarely find in today's books.
