Thus says the Lord: "Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.
But they said, 'We will not walk in it.'" --Jeremiah 6:16

Making Truth a Matter of Personal Opinion

"The glorious charity of the present day is such, that it believes lies to be as good as truth; and lies and truth have met together and kissed each other; and he that telleth truth is called a bigot, and truth has ceased to be honourable in the world!". Those words of Charles Spurgeon apply to our postmodern time perhaps even more than his era. Many Christians today actually think it's normal and even noble to make truth a matter of personal opinion. As a short demonstration of this, here are some actual quotes, taken from the statements of faith - of large highly respected evangelical churches:

"It is not our purpose to cause division or discord in the Body of Christ, conversely, we long for unity among God's people of all persuasions, and we allow for a great deal of flexibility even within our own ranks. Our pastors are not clones who all believe exactly the same thing."

"I would rather have the wrong facts and a right attitude, than right facts and a wrong attitude. God can change my understanding of the facts in a moment, but it often takes a lifetime to effect changes of attitude."

"The ministries and programs of the church are responsive to the needs of individuals within the local context and culture. The church is run for the benefit of the 'customers', not the 'insiders'."

"If the service for seekers is to be effective, it is important that those elements that prevented them from attending previously be absent."

So how do we go about really protecting ourselves in this day and age when truth is relative and words don't seem to matter? How can we protect ourselves from the modern worldly approach of being vague, unclear, and lacking in conviction, all in the name of tolerance and unity? That's important because scripture constantly makes definitive distinctions between the good and the bad, the true and the false, the genuine and the counterfeit. Today's statements of faith try to simulate unity, but end up making it difficult for anyone to even realize when they have dangerously wrong beliefs. More about that in this short video clip:

Matthew 5:18-20 - For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
