Thus says the Lord: "Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.
But they said, 'We will not walk in it.'" --Jeremiah 6:16

Relationships and Sharing Personal Experiences

In a recent conversation that I had about evangelism, someone gave a hearty Amen to this quote from a modern author: "[we should] become involved in the lives and activities of others who are not part of the Christian community, and let our lives prompt others to ask us questions about our faith. When this happens, we have earned a right to be heard. . .". Sometimes this relational approach is coupled with an emphasis on sharing one's own personal and subjective experiences about God, at the expense of the facts.

Furthermore, imagine if the Apostles in the book of Acts - always stopped to develop a relationship with each person that they preached to, as the quote above says - in order to "earn the right to be heard".

In this 13 minute audio clip, the White Horse Inn crew examines "relationship evangelism", and the problems that can occur when we make witnessing fully a matter of sharing personal experience. Since cultists often share their personal experiences with the people that they reach out to, how is an unbeliever to decide who's personal experience sounds more valid? The clip also includes some man-on-the-street interviews with pastors who advocate sharing personal subjective experiences rather than objective biblical facts. After all, they figure, you can't argue with my testimony; it belongs to me, I experienced it, and you can't tell me that it didn't happen. It's thought of as a way to bypass apologetics and trump all objections from unbelievers.

I realize that there's the potential for some controversy on the issue of relationships, so before you take me to task, make sure you listen to the entire audio clip. Ouch :-)
