Truth is ancient; it's grey hairs may make it venerable;
it comes from Him who is the ancient of days. --Thomas Watson

The Lost Key To Gospel Relevancy

Today's evangelism is striving after new and innovative ways to make the Gospel seem more relevant to unbelievers. Churches invest endless effort, creativity, and dollars in new ways of packaging an age-old message, so that it will seem more useful to unchurched Harry and Mary. But is it possible that contemporary Christianity is missing a key biblical component that brings into focus the true relevancy of the Gospel? The answer to that question, is found in this 300+ year old illustration of a broom, some water, and a bunch of dust. ... [Read More!]

Do Different Times Require A Different Message?
A recent book in the user-friendly genre includes a section entitled, "Different Times Require Different Messages". That title caught my eye, so I began reading. This author - who pastors a large, user-friendly church - says modern times have ravaged people's self-esteem so badly that people today actually need to hear a different message from what was appropriate a hundred years ago. ... Pulpits Pirated by Pop-Psychology
Michael Horton believes that the greatest problem with the preaching we hear today is that "there is such a demand to be practical - that is - to have clever principles for daily living. But the danger, of course, is that what one hears on Sunday morning is not the Word of God. To be sure, the Scriptures were read (maybe) and there was a sermon (perhaps), but the message had more in common with a talk at the Lion's Club, a pop-psychology seminar, prophecy conference or political convention than with proclamation of heavenly truth 'from above'." ... The Message HAS Changed (Not Just The Methods)
You often hear it from the leaders of the seeker-sensitive movement: "We haven't changed the message, we've only repackaged it in a relevant way for today's culture". But an in depth examination of the sermons preached at the most innovative mega-churches puts that claim to rest once and for all. ... [Read More!]

The Evil Consequences of Plexiglas Preaching
Armed with a "big business" mentality, many in the seeker-sensitive movement have replaced Bible-based sermons with anecdote-filled talks. After all, that's the stuff that sells. What happens when preachers put the seeker before the Savior and abandon God's Word for ear-tickling entertainment. Often the result is superficial, marginally biblical preaching. ... [Read More!]

The Real Danger, Found Only In The Fine Print
A friend emailed me this photo of a sign created by somebody with an odd sense of humor. It contains multiple warnings that have been woefully mis-prioritized. The trivial warning of the sign's "sharp edges" is emphasized in BIG LETTERS, while down in the fine print - it warns of a far greater danger, a bridge out ahead! This is exactly what is happening in so many "user friendly" (pragmatic) churches now days. Whatever warnings are given, usually relate to the danger of missing-out on a more fulfilled life, or the risk of never realizing "your purpose". Meanwhile the greater danger, the bible's warning of eternal destruction, is minimized or not mentioned at all. ... [Read More!]

Ferrari-Pulpit Preacher Says "It's All About YOU"
We've been through this before with another best-seller that wasnt supposed to be about you. But the YOU-centeredness of this new Christian self-help book should be unmistakable.
Why? Well, for starters - the book is called "YOU"! Need more proof? The mega-church pastor who authored the book, uses these words to describe it on his website: "This book is all about you". It even promises to give you "Three steps to rebuilding your self-esteem". But you know the drill; the book's description contains the familiar double-speak that we've seen before, claiming that it's "not self-centered" after all. ... [Read More!]

A Linchpin Doctrine, Forgotten in Today's Pulpits
Martin Luther said it was key to understanding God's grace. Charles Spurgeon spoke of a prominent writer who testified that he never knew anyone who held a great theological error, who did not also hold a diminished belief in this one specific doctrine. AW Pink had this to say about it: "It is therefore a TESTING doctrine, especially of a preacher's soundness in the faith. A man's orthodoxy on this subject determines his viewpoint of many other doctrines of great importance".
In other words, if you get this one wrong, you risk polluting all of the doctrinal waters that flow downstream from it. ... [Read More!]
