Scripture List: Truth, Knowledge, and Pluralism
Here's a short list to keep on hand for dealing with the Emerging Church Movement. It's not an exhaustive list, but it does demonstrate instances in the bible when statements and people are true. For example, people can tell the truth and thus be true witnesses, or they can lie and be false witnesses. If you are not familiar with the postmodern notions of this movement, what I'm saying may seem obvious to you, however these are the very things under attack today in many circles. If the Emerging Church wishes to remain faithful to scripture, it must speak of truth and our ability to know it as sweepingly and confidently as scripture does. Part of our faithful Christian witness is to insist that there are truths to be believed and obeyed.
This list comes from D.A. Carson's book "Becoming Conversant with the Emerging Church":
Deuteronomy 13:14 - And behold, if it be true and certain that such an abomination has been done among you... 2 Samuel 7:28 - And now, O Lord God, you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant. 1 Kings 10:6 - [The Queen of Sheba] said to the king, "The report was true that I heard in my own land of your words and of your wisdom" 2 Chronicles 18:15 - But the king said to him, "How many times shall I make you swear that you speak to me nothing but the truth in the name of the Lord?" Psalm 25:4-5 - Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. Psalm 119:43 - And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for my hope is in your rules. Psalm 119:160 - The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever. Proverbs 8:7 - for my mouth will utter truth; wickedness is an abomination to my lips. Proverbs 12:17 - Whoever speaks the truth gives honest evidence, but a false witness utters deceit. Proverbs 22:20-21 - Have I not written for you thirty sayings of counsel and knowledge, to make you know what is right and true, that you may give a true answer to those who sent you? Jeremiah 42:5 - Then they said to Jeremiah, "May the Lord be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act according to all the word with which the Lord your God sends you to us." Daniel 8:26 - The vision of the evenings and the mornings that has been told is true, but seal up the vision, for it refers to many days from now. Daniel 11:2 - "And now I will show you the truth". John 4:37 - For here the saying holds true, "One sows and another reaps." John 8:40 - but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did. John 8:45-46 - But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? John 16:7 - Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. Acts 26:25 - But Paul said, "I am not out of my mind, most excellent Festus, but I am speaking true and rational words". Romans 1:18-19 - For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. Romans 2:8 - but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. Romans 9:1 - am speaking the truth in Christ - I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit 2 Corinthians 4:2 - But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God's word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God. 2 Corinthians 7:14 - For whatever boasts I made to him about you, I was not put to shame. But just as everything we said to you was true, so also our boasting before Titus has proved true. Galatians 2:5 - to them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you. Galatians 2:14 But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, "If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you force the Gentiles to live like Jews?" Galatians 4:16 - Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth? Galatians 5:7 -You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth? Ephesians 4:15 - Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12 - and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 2 Thessalonians 2:13 - But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. 1 Timothy 2:3 - This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:7 - For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. 2 Timothy 2:25-26 - correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will. 2 Timothy 3:7 - always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. 2 Timothy 4:3-5 - For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. Titus 1:1 - Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, Titus 1:13 - This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, Hebrews 10:26 - For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 2 Peter 2:22 - What the true proverb says has happened to them: "The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire." 1 John 2:21-22 - I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. Revelation 19:9 - And the angel said to me, "Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb." And he said to me, "These are the true words of God."
