Dumbed-Down Jumbotron Achieves 'Stupid Quota'
In a recent edition of Saddleback Sayings, Rick Warren had this to say: "I want my staff members taking risks and making mistakes. That means they're being innovative and it means they're not afraid to try. Now, I don't want them making the same mistake every week - that means they're not learning, and that is bad. But I tell them, 'Make a new mistake every week'. I tell them, 'Show the innovation and creativity to do something really stupid that you've never done before'".
Well, assuming that he's including worship, that very saying was it's own mistake for whatever week he said it. Corporate worship is not ours to innovate, it's God's and it's for Him to define. Our job is to find out from His Word how He wants us to worship Him.
But on a lighter note, I have another suggestion that could help Saddleback reach their mistakes of the week quota. I'd like to nominate this video of Rick Warren teaching using donuts, dolls (ahem! "action figures"), and a doll house. If you really want to watch the video, you can click on the pictures below; Saddleback entitled it "Playtime at Pastor Rick's". Alrighty then.

I have to agree with Kim Riddlebarger when he said: "Christianity is never more irrelevant than it is when people like Warren dumb it down. Besides that, the video is just plain lame." And that further underscores the point of my post a while ago, entitled: "Church Media Aims For Excellence, Hits Lameness". If any church ought to be hitting the standard of media "excellence", you would think it to be Saddleback, being that they have a massive budget and are pioneers in innovation. If Rick Warren eventually realizes how silly (and patronizing really) this video is, then perhaps it will fit into his category of "mistakes to avoid repeating". If given the chance, I would invite him to stop by Old Truth and take the "Megachurch Jumbotron Challenge" which could go a long way in helping him see the balance that's missing on mega-screens - including the one at America's second-largest church.
