Mailbag: Deviant Disney Church - Part 2

Updated With Photos! - [Our minister] believes that too many people have come from churches that were stodgy and boring, and that church "should be fun". As a result, we have more often than not, a carnival atmosphere. His administrative assistant (who happens to be his son-in-law) and he - will banter back and forth at the beginning of the service. This will be during the "announcement" portion of the service. It's all part of the notion that church shouldn't be boring, but fun. But, the irony of this whole approach, is that when this becomes the routine, the new approach quickly loses its shine, and what is deemed to be "fun" now becomes boring. So, more clever methods have to be dreamnt up to keep the interest high.

This post is a reply that I received from the church goer who wrote yesterday's post; it's in reponse to me asking him about the "restroom themes" that his church has. My reaction was one of laughter followed by sadness.

Our minister had an idea one day. Since he likes cars and motorcycles, he thought it would be "cool" to have the men's room dressed out in a theme that would reflect these interests. With many people's time and effort (much of it volunteering their materials, etc.), he "commissioned" the bathroom project. There is a lighted Penzoil sign in there, with "mag wheels" hanging on the wall. Many pictures of cars, including the "dudes" from Orange County Chopper's fame.

But the highlight of the men's room is the paint job on the toilet stall. One of the guys in our congregation paints autos for a living. He took the metal stall and painted a huge flame on the thing. It's very much like the paint job you'd see on any Nascar racing car. No one is to touch it with regular "cleaners" as they clean this restroom.

I've never seen any restroom like it, anywhere. One is almost hesitant to use it, because it's more of a showpiece than a restroom.

He's promoted it from the pulpit. In fact, they had a "ribbon cutting ceremony" for it. They had people moving through it, like an open-house. He talked about it during the Christmas eve service, and said that the local paper was going to do a story about it. I've been watching to see when this paper has the pictures. I have the pictures, by the way, because I took pictures of this thing. I could send them to you, if you'd like.

I haven't heard much about it lately, but if it gets billing during the Christmas eve service, that says a lot, doesn't it? He had the door of the restroom propped open for the "Christmas program" so that "visitors" could look in there.

I shudder to think if there are plans to do a "theme" for the women's restroom.
