Get Your Primetime Portion of Church History

Don't be a turkey by spending your entire Thanksgiving watching football.
You know the Detroit Lions will loose anyway, and besides - there's better stuff on TV this year. You'll want to fight through the tryptophan drowsies and tune-in for a rare portion of primetime church history.

I've learned from experience; there's two things that I said I would never do again: I will no longer wake up early and go with my wife to the black-Friday after-Thanksgiving sales. No sir! I won't subject my accident-prone body to a stampede of bargain hunting shoppers pushing around their SUV-like shopping carts. I also said I'd never watch another show about Christianity or the bible on the History Channel again. They're usually shows with titles like "The True Story of Noah's Ark", and they invariably invite liberal scholars on to undo everything meaningful in the bible.

This week I made an exception to one of those rules however. I watched the History Channel docu-movie about the Pilgrims called Desperate Crossing. It wasn't bad! I thought they did a pretty good job of sticking to primary sources for their history information and they didn't portray the Puritans with the usual prudish legalistic bias. There were some minor embellishments and the predictable filling-in of the blanks, but I thought it was well worth watching. It's coming on again, three more times, so get ready.

You can watch Desperate Crossing on Thanksgiving Thursday at 7:00PM central time (CST), or again at 11:00PM, on the History Channel. If you miss both of those times, it's on again Sunday at 3:00PM. If you miss that too, then you deserve to pay 20 bucks for the video. For more information, you can check out the Desperate Crossing website or watch this short video clip.

I watched it earlier this week with my kids, and remarked to them how our beliefs are extremely similar to the Pilgrims. Not many Christians today can really say that. We've seen a departure in recent centuries from their Reformed foundation, into what RC Sproul now calls the Pelagian Captivity of The Church. I'm delighted to pass down a rich biblical heritage to my children. If you'd like to read-up on who the Pilgrims were and what it is that they believed, see my Thanksgiving post from last year.

If you do happen to watch Desperate Crossing this Thanksgiving, stop back here afterwards and comment on what you thought about it. I'm interested in knowing your impression of it's historical accuracy. Also, if you've received any injuries (or a near-miss) from black-Friday shopping, share your horror stories below, so that we can commiserate!
