Error is Pervasive, Subtle, and Damning
If error was pervasive back when Paul wrote his letters to Timothy, we can be sure that it is in our day as well. Today there is error on every side; it's not only pervasive but it's subtle and it's damning. In this short sermon excerpt, Tom Chantry drives home the urgency of Paul's admonition to "Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers". If only more pastors today would heed the Apostle's advice. Today there are errors with names like Open Theism, New Perspectivism, and the Emerging Church. We have evangelicals flocking to theaters to see a Catholic film that was written and produced to exalt Mary. We have large flocks that accept and embrace the teachings of pastors who are admitted modalists, believing that God presents himself in three different modes. It used to be that the Trinity was generally agreed upon within Christendom, but now Don Kistler ponders "why do so many who appear on the Trinity Broadcasting Network not believe in the Trinity?". And yet with the pervasive errors in existence today, we can not really say that things are extra-ordinarily bad right now. This is the way things have always been throughout church history, with false teachers rising up on every side. It's going to continue to be this way until the Lord Jesus Christ returns. Not only is error pervasive, but it's often very subtle as well. We can almost long for the days when the Mormons would come around door-to-door, trying to read sections of the Book of Mormon to people. Now however, they have TV advertisements which advertise an 800 number for you to call and receive a free King James bible. They do this because they've learned that subtly taking things out of context on the pages of scripture is a sure way to get into many more homes. Not only is it subtle and pervasive, but error is also damning. The Apostle Paul advocated the firmest form of church discipline for those false teachers who had shipwrecked their faith; he handed them over to Satan. False doctrine is actually blasphemy against God, and blasphemy is the worst crime found anywhere in scripture. False doctrine takes the foundation of Christianity, the Gospel itself, and turns it upside down. Such false teaching is the doctrine of demons, and it has the capacity to damn the soul. This is why 1 Timothy 4:16 says: "Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers". This 14 minute audio clip is an excerpt from the sermon preached just last Sunday at my church. Not only is it a chilling reminder for churches and pastors of the dangers of error, it's also an excellent example of what expository preaching is. In contrast to the modern trend of preaching topical felt-needs based sermons, our Milwaukee church has been privileged to hear Tom Chantry preach through the book of 1 Timothy, verse by verse for over a year now. Listen-in on the exposition of chapter 4 verse 16.
