Goofy Eschatology That Sproul Wants Left Behind
The unfolding of end times events is the most difficult area of biblical interpretation. How do you know what's symbolic and what's figurative? Are the rapture and the 2nd coming one event or two? In this Q&A audio clip, RC Sproul lists the various views of eschatology, and concludes that out of all of them, there is only one of them that he would say is impossible because it's . . . well - it's downright goofy (his word not mine). Sproul's remarks are an interesting contrast to what we've been hearing from the Shepherd's Conference this past week.
This is one topic that I've never posted on, simply because I haven't studied it enough to formulate an opinion. As you have probably already guessed however, I am suspicious of new views of the bible; "new" being - anything in the last couple of hundred years or so.
John MacArthur has a more modern view of end times events; I would even call it new. So, although I usually go way out of my way to defend John MacArthur, this is going to be one of those rare occasions where he's . . . left behind, at least as far as Old Truth is concerned. Last week he made some rather surprising statements, which when translated into street slang, amount to "If you aint a premillenialist, then you aint nothin". Whoa! Maybe that's a bit overstated, but listen to some of the link titles at the bottom of this response post at FIDE-O entitled The Mocked Shepherd: - Grace to You, unless you're Amill
- Johnny Mac Making a Stir
- MacArthur: The Anti-Amillennialist
- A Rap Across The Knuckles
- MacArthur's Diatribe Against Amill Weighed and Found Wanting
You can listen to a good overview of it all on Gene Cook's radio program archive (MP3) in which he interviews the FIDE-O guys on-scene at the Shepherd's Conference. Kim Riddlebarger of the Whitehorse Inn also expressed his disagreement and posted some resources in response.
So with all of that controversy as a backdrop, I now bring you this 6 minute clip from one of RC Sproul's Sunday School classes at his church. This is from a while ago, so it's not actually a response of any kind to John MacArthur.
As I said, I have not studied this subject enough to have a position on it, but I will say that most of the people who I respect the most are Amillennialists. Since I don't know enough in this area of biblical study, I'm going to try to stay out of whatever transpires in the comments below (yes, this one could get ugly). I am interested in what everyone has to say however, and I have an open mind towards most of the views that are out there. Maybe you'll help to convince me, in one direction or another!
