5 October, 2006   comments: (0) Audio Clips   Who Could Be Saved Prior To The Reformation? By the time of the 13th century, Christianity had taken on the form of "salvation via the church". The church of Christ had in fact become the the enemy of Christ. There were no protestants, as the Reformation was still centuries in the future. And yet we know that God's invisible church never ceases to be. So who were the true Christians during this great era of spiritual darkness? If you put John MacArthur in front of millions of people and ask him the hard questions, you are not likely to hear him back down or compromise. With his typical straight shooting, he once answered a question about Roman Catholism in this way: "Catholicism is a false system. It is not the church of Christ, it is the church of anti-Christ. If you follow Catholic theology you'll go to hell. I am not saying that to be unkind but to be truthful. Being truthful is the only way to be kind. People need to come out of that system. It is a system that exalts Mary and it is a system of paganism mingled with pseudo-Christianity." "The truth shall make you free." So in reflecting on church history, you might begin to wonder, who could have been saved in a day when the Roman church was at the height of her power, with few if any alternatives. In this 5 minute audio clip, the late church historian John Gerstner helps to make sense out of that question.
