It almost seems too far out of the Christian mainstream to comment on. That is, until you consider the fact that it's coming from (what Forbes 2003 called) the second-largest mega-church in America.

This is a more brazen version of the prosperity theology being preached by America's largest church (Lakewood).
How does this pursuit of riches match-up with the words of scripture? Proverbs 30:8-9 for example, says: "give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, lest I be full and deny you and say, 'Who is the Lord?' or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God."
Going back in Christian history, to a time when there may have been more "balance" on this issue: One historian notes that, the Puritans (who were not necessarily opposed to wealth) saw three potential dangers in prosperity: (i) In prosperous people there is a tendency for wealth to replace God as the object of ultimate devotion. (ii) Prosperity leads people to rely on themselves instead of on God. (iii) Prosperity is lethal because addictive: prosperity generates an appetite that prosperity can never satisfy. In other words, prosperity, so far from satisfying people, leaves them profoundly discontented. At the same time it fosters a mood of self-sufficiency and invulnerability.
