Following DeWaay Out of Purpose Driven'ism
One of the most effective apologists shining the light on the dangerous errors of the Purpose Driven belief system, is Bob DeWaay. With the release his new book days away, I'll take a look at a whole toolbox full of resources from Bob DeWaay, that will help you to define, demonstrate, and defend from, this subtle attack on Christianity from within it's own walls. Here is a list of books, videos, MP3's, and printable information sheets for you and your church. ... [Read More!]

Purpose Driven Psychology and Human Wisdom
In the Purpose Driven Life book, Rick Warren says "To discover your purpose in life you must turn to God's Word, not the World's wisdom". He further states "you must build your life on eternal truths, not pop-psychology, success motivation, or inspirational stories". After you read the following excerpts from his book however, you may find yourself scratching your head, wondering why it's filled with so many instances of exactly what he claims we do not need. ... Purpose-Pastors Trained to Manipulate Dissenters
One of the books sold on Rick Warren's website teaches pastors how to deal with Purpose Driven dissenters. The author characterizes those who resist the transition to the Purpose Driven franchise as "leaders from hell" who are misguided, and have evil motives or are just unwilling to change because of their being caught in traditions. The message is clear - they are incompatible with the new church scheme, and therefore they must go. But some of the victims of the Purpose Driven scheme are speaking out, and it's clear that many of them simply don't fit the trouble-maker profile described by such a book. ... [Read More!]

Could it Be, The Saddleback Salvation Guarantee?
Rick Warren
 |
At our Easter services in the last three years more than 5,000 people opened their lives to Christ - because YOU invited them! It's almost guaranteed that if you bring those you care about to a Saddleback Easter service, they will come to know Jesus.

You're Making Wrong Judgments (& various other problems)
I'm on my way out for some medical tests, but wanted to quickly share some reader-mail with you, and give you a chance to respond. Don Huff writes-in through our contact form: "Some things you say may be right. Some are wrong; not based on my opinion but based on scripture. No man has all the light. That is why we depend on each other in the body of Christ. But reading your comments you are very critical of many. Do you know their heart? No---no more than I know yours. But the fruit is what separates the wheat from the tares. I do not agree with anyone totally; for we all have mistakes and look through a mirror dimly. I do not have all truth nor do you." ... Critique: The Evangelism Message of Rick Warren
We were pleased to have a member for two decades of Saddleback church visiting with us this week, in the comments of another post on Old Truth. I always appreciate these opportunities because it gives us a chance to interact with an expert witness of sorts. As he repeatedly challenged us to watch Rick Warren's evangelism video as a demonstration that the old truth was still being preached at Saddleback, I decided to take him up on that challenge. Here is my analysis of that 13 minute evangelism presentation. ... [Read More!]

Dumbed-Down Jumbotron Achieves 'Stupid Quota'
In a recent edition of Saddleback Sayings, Rick Warren had this to say: "I want my staff members taking risks and making mistakes. That means they're being innovative and it means they're not afraid to try. Now, I don't want them making the same mistake every week - that means they're not learning, and that is bad. But I tell them, 'Make a new mistake every week'. I tell them, 'Show the innovation and creativity to do something really stupid that you've never done before'". ... [Read More!]

Mailbag 2: "You're Saying God is Selfish"
This is the second email sent to me by one Purpose Driven Life fan. In this conversation, he attempts to make the case that God is man-centered (not God-centered) and that's why Christ came to die for us. In this conversation the idea of God doing all things for His own glory is rejected because it is thought that this would mean that He is selfish. ... [Read More!]

Mailbag 1: "You're Judging, Want Hell Preaching"
I had a couple of emails sent to me this week from one Purpose Driven Life fan; this email concluded by saying "Jim, I ask you to talk to God and ask him if you are being caught up in criticism and judgment. Would it hurt to do that? None of us is complete. What we write is not complete. We are not perfect. Even John points out that the Bible is not complete, because it does not record all the things Jesus said and did. So why criticize Rick Warren for being incomplete? God is our father. Is a father's job to put the 'fear of hell' or the 'fear of God' in his children? Or did Jesus come to say by his life, God loves you!" ... [Read More!]

"Attack Cults Not Purpose-Churches, Evangelize"
We were due. It's been a while since the last "legalistic Pharisee" charge directed at Old Truth. This time it includes the challenge to stop wasting our apologetics on (Purpose Driven) believers and turn our efforts instead towards unbelieving cults. Here are three quotes that summarize why I do not agree:
- "The most insidious opposition to the Gospel has come from within worldly churches." --Iain Murray
- "The greatest threat to the gospel specific to today is the indirect challenge of pragmatism among evangelicals". --Mark Dever
- "The biggest mission field in America is professing-Christianity".
--John MacArthur ... [Read More!]

Non-Warren Christians Are "Picky, Fussy, & Dead"
From the Old Truth mailbag today: My Father was a pastor for 60 years and I attended a Christian college and was thus involved in countless Midwestern churches. Most of those churches were and are "dead on the Vine". I now live here in southern California and I attend Saddleback, WHAT A JOY! What a BLESSING! ... [Read More!]

Symptoms of a Purpose Driven Take-Over
Yet another testimony from someone coming out of the Purpose Driven scheme. He says: "I happen to be one of those who watched the church of my youth turn to purpose driven madness". As in my own experience with a church that adopted this methodology, his church eased-in the system slowly, to minimize potential protest from seasoned church goers: "I will tell you that out of 500 people in my local church, there are about 10-15 that I know of that recognize the shift, and disagree with it for solid, biblical reasons". ... The Crash of Saddleback's Doctrinal Balancing Act
Rick Warren's "Frequently Asked Questions" webpage offers a large quantity of answers for seekers at his church. It's problematic however, when we find answers that contradict each other. Perhaps the contradictions get lost in the sea of other answers, and therefore nobody ends up noticing. One example is in FAQ #11 where he warns: "If you lean too far towards man's free will, you come down on the side of humanism: we are in control of our fate". This is contradicted in FAQ #60, which says your choice is important because "it determines where I am going to spend eternity". Well which is it? ... [Read More!]
