Thus says the Lord: "Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.
But they said, 'We will not walk in it.'" --Jeremiah 6:16

"Hell is Complete Separation From God"
Listen
It's a common theme in evangelism. In fact, I have a huge box of hundreds of sample gospel tracts sitting here next to me, many of which give warnings of total separation from God. Part of the reason for this may be that the modern church assumes that anything which doesn't seem very loving on the other side of eternity must be happening at a distance from a God. This is the second and final post in my short series on things that might surprise you about hell. In this post we'll talk about where God is during eternal punishment. ... [Play/Download MP3]

How Could Heaven Be Joyful if Family Are in Hell?
Listen
Often we hear people say that they could not possibly be happy in heaven knowing that friends and family are in hell. So maybe we won't know, somehow. Or, maybe we won't remember them. Or perhaps we'll be so happy that we will only occasionally remember them? Today and tomorrow I'll be running a two part series on things that might surprise you about hell. In this post, we'll examine the question of loved ones. Brace yourself however, this one is going to be disturbing for some people; perhaps you will even fight what you are about to hear. ... There is No Formula For Making Revival Happen
Listen
When does the timing of revival come? The answer is, "in God's own time", and never at any other time. That of course was the tragic blunder of Charles Finney, in his lectures on revival. He teaches that you can have a revival whenever you want, if you only do certain things and fulfill certain conditions. But that is a complete denial of the sovereignty of God. Not only that, but it is proven by history to be wrong. ... [Play/Download MP3]

Error is Pervasive, Subtle, and Damning
Listen
If error was pervasive back when Paul wrote his letters to Timothy, we can be sure that it is in our day as well. Today there is error on every side; it's not only pervasive but it's subtle and it's damning. In this short sermon excerpt, Tom Chantry drives home the urgency of Paul's admonition to "Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers". If only more pastors today would heed the Apostle's advice. ... [Play/Download MP3]

'Chipper Churches' Distort Reality of Christian Life
Listen
John Piper had this to say in his bio of John Bunyan: One of the main reasons that the Puritans are still being read today is that the fragrance of heaven and the fragrance of hell are on them. Because, they were written in a century (from 1560 to 1660) which was permeated by persecution and suffering, and life was simply hard in the the 17th century even when life was good. Whereas in America, and in the west today we are 'chipper'. Church is chipper, TV is chipper, books are chipper; we're a chipper people. ... [Play/Download MP3]

Who Could Be Saved Prior To The Reformation?
Listen
By the time of the 13th century, Christianity had taken on the form of "salvation via the church". The church of Christ had in fact become the the enemy of Christ. There were no protestants, as the Reformation was still centuries in the future. And yet we know that God's invisible church never ceases to be. So who were the true Christians during this great era of spiritual darkness?... [Play/Download MP3]

Short Belief Statements Do More Harm Than Good
Listen
When a church clearly spells out what they believe, in substantial enough detail where someone who reads their statement of faith can determine from it - what that church actually believes on the key issues and doctrines of Christianity - that serves to promote true unity, not destroy it. Because true unity is not a matter of agreeing to disagree; true unity is when everyone clearly and definitively defines their terms, and everyone knows what the other parties truly believe, and yet everyone still agrees. And so they are truly like minded; that's real genuine unity. But what happens when a church decides to be purposely vague and generic in their statements of faith? ... [Play/Download MP3]

Today's Denial of Original Sin. Is Man Dead in Sin?
Listen
Martin Luther believed that it was the necessary precursor to preaching the Cross, and yet it's a belief that's been abandoned by much of today's church. To demonstrate this, here is an audio clip containing the actual responses that Christian leaders gave to this question: "What do you do with Paul when he says in Romans 3 that noone does good, no not even one, noone seeks after God?" Many of their answers were intriguing, some were even surprised that this passage was in the bible. ... [Play/Download MP3]

To Love Christ is To Love Doctrinal Truth
Listen
There are many modern professing Christians who would be very quick to declare their love for Christ and his Word, yet would also be just as quick to reject any fervent defense of doctrinal truth. They would SAY they love the Word, because they read it everyday, yet they see no need or urgency to passionately defend the truth that the Word of God contains. The problem with that is, if you truly love the scriptures, if you truly realize that they bear Christ's image upon them, you will also love the word of doctrine and the truth found in those very same scriptures. .,.,. Doctrinal truth bears the image of Christ. ... [Play/Download MP3]

Accurate Biblical Interpretation is Hard Work
Listen
In this 4 minute audio clip, John MacArthur says: It escapes some people, that you can't explain the meaning of the scripture, if you don't study the scripture. Approaching the Bible is not some 'mystical' kind of event. It is just plain hard work! I've had young men say to me through the years - "What's the secret to your Bible teaching?" And I will tell them this invariably: the secret to really good Bible teaching is the ability to keep your rear end in a chair until you understand what it means! "Oh, that's not very mystical. It's not very spiritual." No, it's hard work. ... [Play/Download MP3]

Relationships and Sharing Personal Experiences
Listen
In a recent conversation that I had about evangelism, someone gave a hearty Amen to this quote from a modern author: "[we should] become involved in the lives and activities of others who are not part of the Christian community, and let our lives prompt others to ask us questions about our faith. When this happens, we have earned a right to be heard. . .". Sometimes this relational approach is coupled with an emphasis on sharing one's own personal and subjective experiences about God, at the expense of the facts. ... [Play/Download MP3]

How To Pick a Pastor When They All Look Alike
Listen
Today's evangelical pastors often look and sound alike. Their sermons are witty, full of stories, and they tend to quote bible verses and expand upon them with their own personal ideas and philosophies. Think of this short audio clip as a "shopping guide", for those who are looking for a church, or for anyone who simply wants to evaluate their own pastor to see how he measures up. Following the wrong teaching has the potential to shipwreck your faith, so it's vital to know the right criteria to judge your pastor by. ... [Play/Download MP3]

They Fought a War Over Doctrine, Would You?
Listen
You might be surprised by the conclusions that church Historian John Gerstner came to, in this short audio clip about the 17th century protestant versus Catholic conflict called The 30 Years War. You might predict he's going to say, what a senseless war this was, but instead he concludes that if there ever were a 'good' reason for battle, this was it. That's because the message of salvation was at the heart of this war. But today, if the Godblogosphere is any indicator, I would have to conclude that Christians have gone soft, and have lost their stomach for a good fight. ... [Play/Download MP3]

Church History Resources, Gerstner's Top Picks
Listen
If you are interested in learning more about the history of the Christian church, dating back to the time of the Apostles, there are many hundreds of history resources to choose from. But in this 7 minute audio clip, the late John Gerstner, gives you his picks of must-have church history resources. Gerstner was a church historian, teaching the subject at a seminary, and is probably best known as RC Sproul's mentor. After hearing this audio clip a couple of years ago, I purchased several of his recommendations, which are now an important part of my personal library. ... [Play/Download MP3]
