Following DeWaay Out of Purpose Driven'ism
One of the most effective apologists shining the light on the dangerous errors of the Purpose Driven belief system, is Bob DeWaay. With the release his new book days away, I'll take a look at a whole toolbox full of resources from Bob DeWaay, that will help you to define, demonstrate, and defend from, this subtle attack on Christianity from within it's own walls. Here is a list of books, videos, MP3's, and printable information sheets for you and your church.
| ||Bob DeWaay began Critical Issues Commentary in 1992. This mission of this bi-monthly commentary is to address important, contemporary issues in church and society from a Biblical perspective, thereby helping its readers distinguish truth from error and apply the truth in practical ways in their lives. It's an excellent resources that's free of charge. |
CIC issues dealing with Rick Warren include:
The Gospel: A Method or a Message?
How the Purpose Driven Life Obscures the Gospel
| Issue 80 |
"Church Health Award"
From Rick Warren or Jesus Christ?
A Study of the Seven Churches in Revelation
| Issue 86 |
Faulty Premises of the
Church Growth Movement

Redefining the Church

One of the most important resources from Bob DeWaay is a verse-by-verse comparison of each of the scriptures cited in The Purpose Driven Life. Since Rick Warren's book jumps around between numerous bible translations, some of which have questionable accuracy, there is a real need to understand the true meaning of the scriptures being cited. This is compounded by the fact that Rick Warren often uses partial proof-texts that chop bible verses into stand-alone segments. Bob DeWaay's discernment tool gives you a parallel view that compares Warren's scriptures to an accurate text of the bible. The tool is free of charge, and formatted for printing. Download here:

For The Purpose Driven Life
On the day I'm writing this, Bob DeWaay was the guest on WVCY's CrossTalk program. This excellent interview discussed the biblical errors in the Purpose Driven movement, and is available for listening through this . Critical Issues Commentary also has a radio ministry. I frequently check their radio archives for some excellent programs dealing with a variety of issues that impact the modern church. You can listen to these through your computer's speakers, or download the MP3 files for you iPod.
|As I mentioned at the outset, Bob DeWaay |
has just published a new book entitled:
Pastor DeWaay has received many emails over the last two years from people who are concerned about what has happened to their church since it became Purpose Driven. This book explains what has happened, why, and how Purpose Driven churches are different from a Bible-centered, Gospel church.
Excerpt from Redefining Christianity:
"Jesus said, "If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you" (John 15:19). Not even the greatest marketing genius can change this without redefining the church. Seeking the approval of the world is precisely what the Purpose Driven movement is all about."
In the store on Bob DeWaay's website you will find a variety of other resources including video tapes and audio CDs. As I write this page, I'm realizing that it sounds as though I'm a "stockholder" or commissioned sponsor of Bob DeWaay; that is not the case at all. I simply want to get as many of these resources in the hands of believers as possible. They are based on sound doctrine with an historical emphasis that is rooted in the theology of the reformation, and make a great effort at unwinding the modern pragmatism of the modern age.
