7 May, 2008 - by Chad   comments: (0) Today's Methods   Expelled Movie: Science's War Over Human Origin It will not be my normal practice on Old Truth to offer commentary on films but recent comments on some of our posts here and the release of Ben Stein's "Expelled" have prompted me to compose my thoughts on the issues raised in this film. The movie is a documentary about the blacklisting of scientists who wish to raise the topic of Intelligent Design (I.D.) in the world of academia. For even mentioning the subject many scientists have been fired and black listed. The fact that this sort of thing was going on really came as no surprise to me, and in fact I was already familiar with much of what was reported by Stein in his documentary. Ben Stein is an incredibly intelligent and capable man. I would say that the documentary accurately reported the state of the main stream scientific community and it's utter disdain for any idea that even remotely relates to I.D. Their greatest fear is that, in the words of one of the scientists interviewed, religion and prayer will find their way back into the schools. The purpose of scientists at places like the Smithsonian is to rid the world of all knowledge of God by the means of science. Of course the Darwinian Evolutionists (D.E.) saw I.D. as an attempt to bring God and religion into the science discussion and of course this was detestable and utterly ridiculous in their eyes. According to D.E.'s and the powers that be in academia no serious scientist ever entertains a belief in God. To do so is a blasphemy of the god of scientism of the highest order. I was never naive enough to think that scientists on the I.D. side of the issue were going to be quoting Genesis 1:1 or Hebrews 1:2 or 11:3. Neither did I think there was going to be any evidence that the bible's accounting of the creation was going to have some credibility among the scientists involved in the debate. I had no such delusions but what did surprise me was that the I.D. scientists emphatically denied that they were trying to bring God into the discussion at all. They had no interest in saying that God was behind the origin of life. All they wanted to do was explore the idea that there is some intelligence in origin of life, but identifying that intelligence as God was not part of their plan. Clearly the I.D. scientists were more deceived than the D.E. scientist. At least the D.E.'s knew that to talk of an intelligence behind the origin of life was to talk about God. The I.D.er's seemed to want to downplay that issue and try to talk about intelligence but not in order to necessarily identify it or define it. So who is guilty of the greater sin? Who is more deceived? In this film I could see Romans chapter one unfolded right in front of my eyes. Romans 1: 18-20 states; "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse." The evidence of God's divine nature and his eternal power are plain and evident in the creation. To start with pretended scientific study in order to discover whether there is a creator or not is to deliberately reject and suppress the knowledge of God that all men possess. There is no need of great scientific investigation in order to know the things about God that are revealed in the creation. Indeed to deny God from the outset and seek to prove him is a guaranteed way to bring God's hardening and judgment. Instead of discovering the deeper secrets of the universe and finding God they will be lulled into a deep slumber, blinded by their own brilliance and filled with the pride of their so called discoveries until they enter judgment and God's eternal wrath. Indeed all of their investigation is an abomination in the sight of God for the scripture says; "the plowing of the wicked is sin"(Prov 21:4). Many of the scientists interviewed in Stein's documentary were raised in Christian churches. Almost all now have a visceral hatred of God and religion. They have believed Darwin's lie. They had stated plainly that religion was useless, primitive and downright dangerous. Only one such scientist was of the mind that people should have religion if they so wished. He however had rejected it completely and was now battling cancer. A tumor had been removed from his brain but he knew that one day it would come back and that day would be the beginning of the end for him. Reminiscent of King Saul who fearing men more than God and fell on his own spear; on camera this man declared that he would put a bullet in his own head before he suffered the painful death of brain cancer. He would usurp God's divine authority to give and take life. What a bleak and hopeless man. He had abandoned all knowledge of God and his Christ for the god of scientism. A god which can neither hear nor speak nor save. Only wrath and indignation await this man now. At the time of the film's release this man's tumor had returned. Without the Savior he will suffer only anguish and horror as he contemplates his own demise. The scripture warns that those who taste the heavenly gift and count the blood of Christ a common thing will find no place of repentance (Heb 6:4-6). As I watched this film I wondered if this man fell into this category and whether this man would ever find a place of repentance. The scriptures give us all the answers to the questions that plague scientist about the origin on life. Not only are we told how God made the creation, by his word, we are told how long it took, six days, we are told why, for his glory. Scientists will forever vex themselves trying to figure out the reason for death. The scriptures tell us that death is the result of sin. No amount of scientific investigating can ever reach such a conclusion. Indeed, all such things are articles belonging solely to faith (Heb 11:3). Furthermore, science will never lead men to knowledge of the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. Science can never bring forgiveness and mercy to man, but it can bring wrath and indignation. All of their work is vanity and striving after wind. If men would only take God at his word, as he is revealed in Holy Scripture, they would be able to pursue investigation into God's magnificent creation without vexation and then and only then can they fulfill their purpose; to fear God and obey his commandments for this is the whole duty of man (Ecc 12:13).
