"Belief Statements Create Harmful Borders"

Tony Jones was recently asked about the concerns being expressed by some - that Emergent has no doctrine or a statement of faith. His response: "I'm even more concerned that people [do] have statements of faith. Statements of faith are about drawing borders, which means you have to load your weapons and place soldiers at those borders. You have to check people's passports when they pass those borders." ... In some Christian circles soul winning ends up becoming 'belt-notching'. This misguided thinking brings to mind comparisons of the 'kill' talley painted on the cockpits of fighter aircraft. Here's the account of a former soul winning ace, who one day started to question the shallowness of manipulating people into praying that simple prayer; the one that is said to trigger salvation. In one of the accounts that he gives, a drunk man is coached into praying the sinner's prayer. Incredibly, it was later said of the drunk man: ____ "I wonder if he'll even remember getting saved? Boy will he be surprised when he gets to heaven!". ____ ... [Read Link]

To Love Christ is To Love Doctrinal Truth    Listen

There are many modern professing Christians who would be very quick to declare their love for Christ and his Word, yet would also be just as quick to reject any fervent defense of doctrinal truth. They would SAY they love the Word, because they read it everyday, yet they see no need or urgency to passionately defend the truth that the Word of God contains. The problem with that is, if you truly love the scriptures, if you truly realize that they bear Christ's image upon them, you will also love the word of doctrine and the truth found in those very same scriptures. .,.,. Doctrinal truth bears the image of Christ. ... [Play/Download MP3]

Atheist: "Why Can't I Understand The Bible?"

A reader by the name of Andri wrote-in yesterday, to ask whether it's possible for someone who considers himself to be an atheist, to understand the scriptures. Andri says that he does not believe in God, but has been learning many valuable lessons from the bible, ever since childhood.
He visits Old Truth wondering why Christians keep telling him that he can't understand the bible simply because he's an unbeliever. ... [Read More!]

The Lost Key To Gospel Relevancy

Today's evangelism is striving after new and innovative ways to make the Gospel seem more relevant to unbelievers. Churches invest endless effort, creativity, and dollars in new ways of packaging an age-old message, so that it will seem more useful to unchurched Harry and Mary. But is it possible that contemporary Christianity is missing a key biblical component that brings into focus the true relevancy of the Gospel? The answer to that question, is found in this 300+ year old illustration of a broom, some water, and a bunch of dust. ... [Read More!]

Salvation is Free But Truth Must Be Bought

Arthur Pink noted how readily men with a superficial understanding of Scripture consider themselves qualified to pass judgment on the teachings and writings of those who have devoted a lifetime to the continuous and concentrated study of God's Word.
He understood that the Word of God does not yield
up it's meaning to lazy people. Salvation is free;
but "Truth" has to be "bought" (Proverbs 23:23);
yet few indeed are willing to pay its stipulated price. ... [Read More!]

Who Are You Calling a Pharisee? and Why?

(Originally posted 12/1/05) - JC Ryle warned that if you dare to say of one doctrine that 'it is true' and of another 'it is false', you can expect to be called narrow-minded and uncharitable. And as Paul Crouch from TBN demonstrates, you can often expect to be called a 'Pharisee' as well: "I'm tired of Scribes, Pharisees, hypocrites blocking God's bridges when the harvest is perishing out there and God's calling the body to come together. Let Him sort out all this doctrinal doo-doo, I don't care about it!". But before you call someone a Pharisee, consider this advice. ... [Read More!]

How To Make Your Own "Relevant Pastor Blog"

Have you ever noticed how many growth-driven pastors today have written their own books on "how to seem relevant to the world"? That's why it amazes me that this particular book title has never been thought of before, given the fact that so many of them also have their own blogs. I've been reading those blogs for a couple of years now, and have noticed enough similarities, that I think I could write this book for them! Here's a sneak peak at the blogging checklist that I'd put on the back cover of such a book. ... [Read More!]

Do Churches Get Carried Away With Nationalism?

The 4th of July holiday is upon us, and it brings to mind some of the most troubling church services that I had ever attended. I'm not anti-patriotic, but some of what will go on in churches this weekend is going to be so out of place for a house of worship. A service at my old church included a flag-draped Harley wheeling up the center aisle of the sanctuary, while soldiers sang patriotic songs up on the stage. How much is too much?... [Read More!]

If you are familiar with Emergent leader Brian McLaren, you know just how evasive he can be. His fans think he's clever for the way he gets himself out of answering questions that he doesn't want to be asked. They believe it's a strategy to redirect the conversation to questions that are more up to date with the current culture. With that in mind, you'll enjoy this humorous parody of an interview with "Cryin McLaren"; it starts off with a simple question that should be easy for anyone to answer: "What color is the sky?". Nope, he can't give a straight answer even on that one. That is, not until they replace his coffee with "Folgers Truth Crystals". Finally some straight answers! Thanks to Phil Johnson for this audio link... [Read Link]

3 July, 2006   Back To The Bible

There are countless distractions that keep Christians from doing what they're supposed to, and many of them seem harmless enough, maybe even noble. But when it comes to having good doctrine and proper biblical interpretation, there is simply no substitute for spending a lot of time just reading and studying scripture. Yet, in a culture that's high-tech, fast paced, and multimedia driven, the decidedly low-tech process of just reading the bible only appeals to the sincere of heart. And on that note, I'd like to introduce the latest addition to the Old Truth movie theatre (in the upper right corner of the screen); it's a reminder for us all to make sure that we redeem the time that God has given us. ...
