Am I Guilty of Reformed Popery and should Christians Go To Church? A response to Lee.

I recently received an email from a commenter name Lee who prefaced it by accusing me of Reformed Popery. The email was titled "Reformed Popery" and simply commented that it was a shame that I wouldn't publish his comment. Jim usually handles this sort of thing but with him out of commission for the time being I thought it would be a good idea to highlight some of Lee's claims in a post. I was going to photoshop up a picture of me as the Pope for a graphic that would have gone great with this post but Jim is the one who handles the formatting and my HTML skills are virtually non-existent so this one's all business and no sparkle.

New Health Concerns for Jim

As you all know Jim has had some very serious trials with his health lately. I got an email from him today saying that he was going to have to check into the hospital for a while.

Here's what's happening. Jim's physical activity is usually very restricted because of the bone condition and then when he breaks something, like breaking his shoulder last week, he becomes even more sedentary. As a result Jim always has edema in his legs and when he gets injured the edema seems to get worse. His doctor is concerned enough about the edema that he wants Jim in the hospital for possibly as long as a week. They want to make sure that his health isn't affected by this or that the edema isn't being caused by some other health concern that has gone undetected so far. ... [Read More!]

False Doctrine Worse Than Division   Iain Murray

Divisions and separations are most objectionable in religion. They weaken the cause of true Christianity.- But before we blame people for them, we must be careful that we lay the blame where it is deserved. False doctrine and heresy are even worse than schism. If people separate themselves from teaching which is positively false and unscriptural, they ought to be praised rather than reproved. In such cases separation is a virtue and not a sin. ... Following DeWaay Out of Purpose Driven'ism

One of the most effective apologists shining the light on the dangerous errors of the Purpose Driven belief system, is Bob DeWaay. With the release his new book days away, I'll take a look at a whole toolbox full of resources from Bob DeWaay, that will help you to define, demonstrate, and defend from, this subtle attack on Christianity from within it's own walls. Here is a list of books, videos, MP3's, and printable information sheets for you and your church. ... [Read More!]

"They're Aware of Their Sin, Why Beat Them Up?"

That sounds reasonable, doesn't it? I mean, after all -
who would honestly say that they've never sinned?
Probably nobody. And since unbelievers already feel guilty enough over they're past mistakes, then it goes without saying that we should spend the vast majority of our time preaching a positive message of Good News to them, rather than dwelling on the negatives. In this post, we'll actually go inside of a prison and test-out this theory on convicted felons. If anybody ought to understand their own guilt and sinfulness, it would be real/live rapists, murders, and thieves, right?
Warning: Understanding the things in this video could
challenge your entire view of 'relevance' in evangelism. ... [Read More!]

Taking a Few Days Off - See You Next Week

Some of our regular Old Truth readers, have been sending me emails this week such as this one from Joan: "Hello, I've noticed that no new subjects have been posted in a few days. I hope you are doing ok health-wise and otherwise. I have you in my prayers." Thank you Joan and everyone else who has expressed concern. Rest assured, it is in my plans to be back shortly (a week from today as a matter of fact) on June 10th. Here's a short post to let you know what's behind my absence this week. ... [Read More!]

What Value Does The Bible Have, To You?

A Puritan evangelist, John Rogers, warned his congregation against neglecting Scripture by telling them what God might say: "I have trusted you so long with my Bible - it lies in some houses all covered with dust and cobwebs, you care not to listen to it. Do you use my Bible that way? Well, you shall have my Bible no longer". Rogers then picked up his Bible and started walking away from the pulpit. Then he stopped, fell on his knees, and took on the voice of the people, who pleaded, "Lord, whatever Thou dost to us, take not Thy Bible from us; kill our children, burn our houses, destroy our goods; only spare us Thy Bible, take not away Thy Bible". "Say you so?" the minister replied... [Read More!]

The Relevancy of Doctrine - Part 1

How often do we hear it today, "Doctrine really isn't relevant for me; I need something that will help me with my struggles in life". Martyn Lloyd-Jones addressed that sentiment by saying: There is nothing which is so wrong, and so utterly false, as to fail to see the primary importance of true doctrine. Looking back over my experience as a pastor for some thirty-four years, I can testify without the slightest hesitation that the people I have found most frequently in trouble in their spiritual experience have been those who have lacked understanding. You cannot divorce these things. ... [Read More!]

Acts Church Emphasized Teaching Not Activities   Martyn Lloyd-Jones

In Acts 2, what did the Christians come together for? Here were these people who had come out of the world to join the group of people called disciples, and they formed the first church, but what is the Christian church for? What does she do? What does she provide? Do Christian people come together for socials, dances, raffles, dramatic performances, lectures on politics, literature, and sociology? There was nothing like that in the early church. It is not my objective to denounce these things. But I do want to show how far removed they are from the Christian church. You can get all that in the world, and you can get it very much better there. The Christian church makes a fool of herself when she attempts these things--she does them so badly. If you want activities like that, then go and get them organized professionally. But that is not the Christian church. It is a travesty. ... [Read More!]
