Thus says the Lord: "Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.
But they said, 'We will not walk in it.'" --Jeremiah 6:16

"I Have Grown a Church of Baptized Pagans"   Mark Dever

"In [this city], churches are wealthy enough to market themselves a crowd (I am also guilty). And how do we market? By asking and supplying what people say they prefer for their church experience. Given that my community finds 'relevance' the most important value to hold, I have been feeding them human enrichment rather than eternal and powerful truth" ... [Read More!]

Old Truths versus The Quest For 'Something New'    Listen

A Purpose Driven protestor recently left this comment here: "from the very title of your blog - 'Old Truth' - I must say it appears that you must not understand truth very well. There is no 'old' truth or 'new' truth, only THE truth. So your blog header speaks volumes to me about your (lack of) understanding of God, and in light of that, your evangelism methods". Another pastor was once so incensed by "Old Truth" that he started his own response blog to refute my beliefs; he called his blog "Original Truth". But almost as a prescription to cure those misunderstandings, here's a short audio clip from the sermon that I heard in person yesterday; it's on the need to be anchored to and reminded of the old truths. ... The Lord's Day: Pipa's Preparation Points

Unless you are a modern believer in "all nine of the ten commandments", or even if you ARE mathematically challenged when it comes to the 4th commandment but yet you still want to make Sundays special, here are a few tips on how you can leverage Saturdays to help you get ready for the Lord's Day. These are a few pointers from Joseph Pipa (no that's not how they spell Piper in Massachusetts). ... [Read More!]

Four Ways The Gospel is Spoiled   JC Ryle

But we do say confidently, that there are many ways in which the faith of Christ may be marred and spoiled, without being positively denied. And here we venture to think is the very reason that so much religion called Christian, is not truly Evangelical. The Gospel in fact is a most curiously and delicately compounded medicine, and a medicine that is very easily spoiled. Here are four ways to spoil the Gospel. ... [Read More!]

Our 'Abundant Life' Should Impact Evangelism   William Gurnall

"A feast is made for laughter," Solomon wrote (Ecclesiastes 10:19). I am sure God intended His children to be joyful in the feast of Christ's Gospel. In the Old Testament, mourners were not allowed to sit at God's table. Since a saint's gloom reflects unkindness on God Himself, how can we recommend His satisfying love if it does not satisfy us? The world thinks the Christian life is depressing anyway, a dry meal where very little wine of joy is tasted. Why will you confirm their deception, Christian? ... [Read More!]

Today's Synergized 'Wonderful Plan' Evangelism

The salvation page on one church website is similar
to so much of today's evangelism when it says:
"Choosing Jesus is the most important decision an individual could ever make. It is also one of the few choices in life that is win/win. You are guaranteed victory in this life when you become a believer in Jesus Christ, and you receive the promise of spending eternity in heaven when you die. God thought you were important enough to provide you with an opportunity to be a conqueror in this life and throughout eternity. God has a wonderful plan for you". ... [Read More!]
