Thus says the Lord: "Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.
But they said, 'We will not walk in it.'" --Jeremiah 6:16

R.M. M'Cheyne on Governing Your Family

If you do not worship God in your family, you are living in positive sin; you may be quite sure you do not care for the souls of your family. If you neglected to spread a meal for your children to eat, would it not be said that you did not care for their bodies? And if you do not lead your children and servants to the green pastures of God's Word, and to seek the living water, how plain is it that you do not care for their souls! ... [Read More!]

The Effects of Following 'Partial Truth'

Spurgeon noted that: in certain parts of David Livingstone's missionary travels, he tells us, that his guides were either so ignorant or so determined to deceive him, that he could have done far better without them than with them; and he had constantly to refer to his compass, lest he should be led astray. Now, I would not say a hard thing if I did not believe it true; but I do solemnly think that there are some professed teachers of the Word, who are either so ignorant of spiritual things in their own hearts, or else so determined to preach anything but Christ, that you might do better without them than with them; and hence you have an absolute necessity to turn perpetually to this great compass [the bible] by which alone you can steer your way. ... In the era of the Great Awakening, a letter from
Jonathan Edwards in response to an inquiry from a young person, gave some excellent advice:My Dear Young Friend: As you desired me to send you, in writing, some directions how to conduct yourself in your Christian course, I would now answer your request... [Read Link]

Church History Resources, Gerstner's Top Picks    Listen

If you are interested in learning more about the history of the Christian church, dating back to the time of the Apostles, there are many hundreds of history resources to choose from. But in this 7 minute audio clip, the late John Gerstner, gives you his picks of must-have church history resources. Gerstner was a church historian, teaching the subject at a seminary, and is probably best known as RC Sproul's mentor. After hearing this audio clip a couple of years ago, I purchased several of his recommendations, which are now an important part of my personal library. ... [Play/Download MP3]

The First-Ever 'Athenian Spirit' Award Winner

Recounting the Athenians in Acts 17, CH Spurgeon spoke of those in modern times who are ever straining after novelties. There may be much of the "Athenian spirit" among congregations, but that should be no excuse for it's being tolerated among ministers, who should be the last to spend their time in seeking "something new". Leaders who are quick to jettison old truth, are now eligible for the "Athenian Spirit Award". Charles Stanley is a recipient. ... [Read More!]

Salvation = Faith + Knowledge? (Yes, of Course!)

I posted a quote from Martyn Lloyd-Jones, the other day on Slice, which included these words "The Word of God says that man's immortal soul, his eternal state, depends upon his right knowledge of the truth". I admit, the post was aimed squarely at the Emerging Church movement, and it managed to draw the predicted return-fire from the postmodern camp. The implication of which, was that I was somehow front-loading a "knowledge" requirement on to the Gospel. Could that be true? ... [Read More!]

In case you missed it, the Riddleblog posted the results of a walk-up survey given to pastors at a recent ministry convention. Take a look at their answers to basic questions like these, and remember - these are pastors:
Is justification by: works, faith and works combined, or faith alone? Is justification a one time declaration or a life long process? Are you familiar with the doctrine of imputation?... [Read Link]

When Believers Organize on Activities & Activism

We are living in days when the practical aspect of Christianity is being emphasized almost exclusively by some Christians. It is the day of activism and of activists. The world has never been so busy in trying to deal with its various problems; and the same is largely true of the Church. The practical, activist type of Christian is suspicious of a teaching which he thinks will make people sit down in isolation and wait for experiences. 'They never do anything else', he says, 'they are not practical Christians; they are not involved in all the usual activities'. Such an argument is based on sheer ignorance, not only of the Scriptures, but also of Church history. ... [Read More!]

Is Synergism The Cause of Seeker-Centered?

Consider the implications of these two statements from the princes of the church-growth movement: Rick Warren said:
"It is my deep conviction that anybody can be won to Christ if you discover the key to his or her heart, and the most likely place to start looking for that key is within the person's felt needs". Bill Hybels said: "If they'll sustain that kind of all out effort, they're going to break through all the barriers keeping them from belief". What's biblically wrong with those statements, and how might this thinking have lead to our modern seeker-centered madness?... [Read More!]
