Thus says the Lord: "Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.
But they said, 'We will not walk in it.'" --Jeremiah 6:16

Books: Using The Thoughts of Other Men's Brains

The comments on my last post brought out some controversy related to the topic of bible helps and theology books, so I thought I would turn this post over to Charles Spurgeon and even the Apostle Paul, for their opinions on books. We are confronting the contemporary attitude of Christians that says "I don't read the books of man, the bible is all that I need". ... [Read More!]

Is The Bible The Only Book That You Should Read?

Last week I posted a Martyn Lloyd Jones excerpt which suggested that Christians should study their bibles and read the best books available, to get knowledge that is as deep and profound as possible. He was responding to Christians who say, 'I am saved, and all is right with me; I am not interested in anything else. I am not a theologian, I do not want to read great books on theology'. An anonymous commenter followed-up with: "The only 'reading material' a Christian needs is the BIBLE. Everything else is man's words". If you have similar views, here's a look at the gold mine that you may be passing by. ... [Read More!]

Should They Accept Christ as Personal Savior?

In an effort to get sinners saved we often hear them exhorted to "Accept Christ as their personal Savior"
as though those who are slaves of Satan and captives of the Devil could do so and be saved if they did so.
But this is utterly foreign to Holy Scripture; there is no foundation in Holy Writ for it. It presents a false way of salvation, and therefore should be discarded along with other similar expressions such as
"Give your heart to Jesus", "Take Jesus as your Savior", etc. ... [Read More!]

Is Your Pastor a Comedian?

Someone who is near and dear to me recently announced that he had switched churches. I was surprised by this since his children were plugged-in and really flourishing at his old church. When I asked him for the reason for his switch, he gave me one simple answer: At his new church, "the pastor is much more funny". He said that the pastor at his old church simply didn't keep his attention. I was taken back by the shallowness, as he began to reenact for me how his new pastor would clown around on stage, to imitate biblical characters such as Samson. ... [Read More!]

Do Large Followings Indicate 'Success'?

Numerous seeker-driven church leaders came out slugging this week in defense of numeric statistics being a valid indicator of "church success". We know that growth CAN be indicative of church health, but this is not always the case. There are large churches that are corrupt, and small churches that are healthy and blessed of God. Unfortunately what is typical of so many modern church leaders is that large crowds, positive feedback, and audience excitement all work together to cause a placebo effect, giving the perception that they are on the right track. Many of these leaders end up overlooking the more accurate and biblically-based indicators of ministry-success and church health. ... [Read More!]

A record of crucial change from 1950 to 2000. Of particular interest to many, according to Gary Gilley, will be the record of Billy Graham's slide from a biblically fundamental position to that of ecumenicalism and inclusiveism. His warning to present day compromisers is sharp and painful. Other examples in the book include Fuller Seminar, InterVarsity, ECT, Packer, Colson, Stott, and others. Murray carefully traces the historical fall of each of these men and organizations in an attempt to persuade us to hold the line... [Read Link]

Pastoral Success Depends Upon Personal Holiness

In the 19th century, Horatius Bonar pondered the genuine soul-winning success of some of the greatest pastors: "Whence came their success? Why, may not the same success be ours? We may take the sermons of Whitefield or Berridge or Edwards for our study or our pattern, but it is the individuals themselves that we must mainly set before us; it is with the spirit of the men, more than of their works, that we are to be imbued, if we are emulous of a ministry as powerful, as victorious as theirs". Bonar concluded that there was a certain quality that any great pastor has, and it is an oft-lacking quality that pastors are still in need of today. ... [Read More!]

We are in the midst of a radical change in evangelicalism that has left countless Christians starving for God's Word in their churches. Proponents of the change have labeled as "divisive" those who resist the movement away from gospel preaching and Bible teaching. Opponents of the change are declared judgmental and selfish "Pharisees" and are told that they should be more loving toward others and quit hanging onto their old ideas about church. In short the "troublemakers" are told they must embrace the new paradigm or leave. At issue is the true nature of Christian unity. Are we unified by God's work of grace that converted us, giving us the unity of the Spirit with all true Christians, or are we unified organizationally with the corporate "vision" of the new paradigm change agents? ... Does Brian McLaren Have a Generous View of Hell?

Emergent Church guru Brian McLaren insists that
"we need to go back and take another look at Jesus' teachings about hell" and implies that there are
problems with conventional beliefs about it.
The doctrine of eternal punishment is under attack today from a variety of church movements. In this article, Pastor Ken Silva takes a closer at the views of one of the Emergent Church's most notable leaders. ... [Read More!]

Evangelicalism is Fighting For it's Very Life

The bible warns of increasing deception and of wolves
that will come in sheep's clothing. Is the church prepared?
A well known pastor had this to say about modern Christianity: It seems to me that if any one problem out strips all the others in the church, it is the utter lack of spiritual discernment; the ability to discern truth from error regarding God and the things of God. ... [Read More!]
