"Always remember, when somebody comes up with something new,
it's usually wrong. We are to be plagiarists of the same information that
God gave the first Christians." -- Dr. Matthew McMahon, aPuritansMind.com

27 February, 2006   Today's Worldliness

Charles Spurgeon reminded us that "great attempts have been made to make the church receive the world, and wherever it has succeeded it has come to this result: the world has swallowed up the church. It must be so. The greater is sure to swamp the less. The theory seems to be, that it is well to have a broad gangway from the church to the world. If this is carried out, the result will be that the nominal church will use that gangway to go over to the world, but it will NOT be used in the other direction. . . . Did Christ ever say 'Try to make an alliance with the world, and in all things be conformed to its ways'? Nothing could have been further from our Lord's mind. Oh, that we could see more of holy separation; more dissent from ungodliness, more nonconformity to the world!" ... [Read Link]

Learning From How The Reformers Preached

In the 19th century, R.L. Dabney wrote -
"All the leading Reformers, whether in Germany, Switzerland, England or Scotland were constant preachers, and their sermons were prevalently expository"; the purpose was to explain the meaning of Scripture. So he says, "We can assume with safety that the instrumentality to which the spiritual power of the great revolution of the Reformation - was mainly due to the restoration of scriptural preaching". ... Learning From How The Reformers Preached    Listen

In this 6 minute audio presentation, John MacArthur takes a look at what and how the Reformers preached. ... [Play/Download MP3]

Drawing Crowds With Sex Therapy Sermons

I'm usually suspicious of conspiracy theories, so I realize that if you are like me, you're going to want proof that what follows is a REAL conspiracy.
I'm going to attempt to convince you that - when churches abandon biblical doctrine in favor of repetitive themes on "how to have great sex", their true motives are often concealed beneath a pious cover story of "helping people understand what the bible teaches on this topic". Here's a look at the real motivation behind this new trend within growth-driven churches, in which audiences are bombarded by an inordinate amount of Sunday morning sex training, often advertised in a risque' manner. If your pastor sounds more like a sex therapist lately, than a minister of the gospel, this may be why. ... [Read More!]

How Much Do You Love Christ? (Take The Test)

One early church leader expressed his love for Christ in this way: "If my father were weeping on his knees before me, my mother hanging on my neck behind me, my brethren, sisters, and kinsfolk - howling on every side to retain me in a sinful course, I would fling my mother to the ground, run over my father, despise all of my kindred and tread them under my feet, that I might run unto Christ". What follows could be considered a "questionnaire", useful for testing your own love for Christ. It comes to us from the Puritan pen of Thomas Vincent... [Read More!]

Video Series Based on Thomas Vincent's Book

I continue to push the Word Pictures videos from CrossTV because they've made such a big impact on my life over the past several years. Though the videos are professionally and thoroughly done, CrossTV's website isn't. Because of that, and in an effort to give back to CrossTV, I'm doing my best to provide additional web information for some of their most important video sets. One that I've watched several times, and can highly recommend is
The True Christian's Love for the Unseen Christ ... [Read More!]

Symptoms of a Purpose Driven Take-Over

Yet another testimony from someone coming out of the Purpose Driven scheme. He says: "I happen to be one of those who watched the church of my youth turn to purpose driven madness". As in my own experience with a church that adopted this methodology, his church eased-in the system slowly, to minimize potential protest from seasoned church goers: "I will tell you that out of 500 people in my local church, there are about 10-15 that I know of that recognize the shift, and disagree with it for solid, biblical reasons". ... One of the signs of the evangelical movement's ahistorical attitude is its downplaying or outright denial of creeds. Those who say "the New Testament is my only creed" or "I just believe in the Bible" affirm nothing distinguishing them from a multitude of cults. They beg the question of interpretation.
This article illustrates the need for interpretive creeds using a classic example from the 4th century, and gives seven considerations for the use and value of creeds. ... [Read Link]

The Martyrdom of Polycarp - A.D. 155

Three days before he was apprehended, as he was praying at night, he fell asleep, and saw in a dream the pillow take fire under his head, and presently consumed. Waking thereupon, he forthwith related the vision to those about him, and prophesied that he should be burnt alive for Christ's sake. The pursuers having arrived late in the day found him gone to bed in the top room of the house. ... [Read More!]

Oscar Nominee For 'Best Christian Horror Movie'

If there were such a thing as a Christian "horror movie", it ought to be based on this ominous scene from

few things on earth that would be more frightening
than being sin-trapped in John Bunyan's iron cage. ... [Read More!]

The Books That Taught The Puritans To Pray

It's been said that these books taught generations of Puritan-era Christians how to pray. They are simply outlines of prayer that are filled with scripture; they are literally scripture prayer. After you read these books, you will never again say "How can I pray an hour a day?", and instead you may very well ask "How can I get through all of the things to pray for in the allotted time?". It's time to put away those modern Jabez prayers, and the purpose journal, and take your prayer habits back a few centuries. ... [Read More!]

Love To Christ - Necessary to Escape the Curse

The Puritans were never lacking in wordy titles for their
writings, and likewise - Thomas Doolittle's excellent book
has this ominous-sounding, yet biblically accurate title:
Love To Christ Necessary to Escape the Curse at His Coming. It's a book that would never make it to the New York Times bestseller list as today's Christian feel-good books do,
but it does have an important message for the modern church; it's based on a solid exposition of 1 Cor. 16:22 -
If anyone does not love the Lord - a curse be on him.

Why Some Muslims Are Less Peaceful Than Others

I found this to be interesting, in light of the recent Muslim rioting in various places around the world. Peter Hammond is a missionary in Africa who has a great deal of contact with Muslims, and has authored books on Islam. He gives this insight relating to why some countries seem to have more confrontation with this not-so-peaceful religion: As long as the Muslim population remains around 1% of any given country they will be regarded as a peace-loving minority and not as a threat to anyone. ...
