Bribery: Whatever It Takes To Get Them In Church

It occurred to me - we Christians might just be missing out on the next great opportunity for church growth. We could achieve so much more than we do today if we weren't so stingy and inhibited by tradition. We've been offering a lot of things to bring in the "unchurched" over the past decade or so from food courts to tennis courts, coffee shops to gift shops and pop rock to hip-hop. The list goes on. But now, brothers and sisters, it's time to rally the troops and raise that bar once again ... [Read More!]

The Inhabitants of Earth Are Accounted as Nothing

Photos like these make it vividly clear just how very small we are, and how big God is. And as this classic sermon on Daniel 4:34-35 reminds us - there was once a time when we were in deed "nothing", and if God were to will it, we would cease to be. ... [Read More!]

The First Thanksgiving: Who Were The Pilgrims?

On this day we remember the hardship, faith, and accomplishment of that group of historic Christians known as "The Pilgrims". Who were they, and what were their beliefs?... [Read More!]

Learn To Be A Workman Approved By God

Every once in a while, I try to get in a good plug for a learning resource called 'A Workman Approved By God'
which explains how to study the bible and avoid error.
The people from Logos Bible Software recently contacted me about using the review I had previously written for this product. They're starting to bundle it with their products. Here's what they are offering, and also some new sample clips they've put online. ... [Read More!]

Forcing War Upon Allies: Truth Versus Actions

Are deeds and doctrines intended to be inseparable allies, or can they be pitted against each other as enemies? There are modern movements underway which force these two
guy-wires of Christianity to pull against each other in an unbiblical contest of tug of war. A leader in one such movement is Erwin McManus, who has begun a siege against Christianity from within it's own walls.

Is There Absolute Truth?

Here is a common question you will run into regarding the Emergent Church Movement and their objection to the concept of absolute truth:

"Can you produce any Scriptures which contain the phrase 'Absolute Truth'? And there isn't anything in the Bible that uses the phrase 'Literal word of God', because 2 Tim. 3:16 doesn't say anything about Scripture literally being the Word of God does it"?

More Audience-Sovereignty 101, Robert Schuller

Have you heard the new lyrics for Amazing Grace? Instead of "saved a wretch like me" some churches are singing "saved and strengthened me". That fits in perfectly with Robert Schuller's modern definition of sin as "any act or thought that robs myself or another human being of his or her self-esteem". ... [Read More!]

God is The Seeker, So Let's Be Sensitive To Him

Although we want to remove false barriers to worship, there are problems with the "seeker-sensitive" approach. Most importantly, its main premise flies in the face of the Bible's teaching. Romans 3:11 says, "No one seeks for God." ... [Read More!]

Are You Evangelizing For All The Wrong Reasons?

We hear much today of what man does and can do and ought to do.
But we by no means hear so much of what God is doing and has purposed
to do. Man's role stands very prominently in view. God's arm and power are hidden. It seems almost as if man would thrust God aside, take the reins of control out of His hands and be to himself a god. ... [Read More!]

The 'Peace Plan' Of The Reformers

Last week we saw Pastor Rick Warren join forces with secular and religious leaders to speak-out against Malaria. It's part of his P.E.A.C.E. Plan aimed at solving many of the world's chronic problems including poverty and disease.
What about the 16th century Reformers,
what was their 'peace plan'?... [Read More!]

A Prayer From The Book That Started Puritanism

Dr. John Gerstner said it was the devotional book that started the Puritan movement (besides the Bible).
Here's a prayer from one of the most popular devotional manuals written by the puritans of the 17th century. ... [Read More!]

Church-O-Rama or Corporate Worship?

Evangelical worship is becoming an oxymoron. Our songs are either belted out in the same mindless intensity with which we sing our football team's fight song, or we are crooning romantic ditties that would be more at home in an old 1930s B movie. Irreverence has become so rampant in our worship services that one would not be shocked to hear of deacons walking up and down the aisles yelling, "Popcorn, peanuts, sacraments!"

Why Pray If Things Are Predestined?

Although it's an almost abandoned doctrine in the modern church, predestination is inescapable in the pages of the bible. So the question
is often asked, if God has already decided the outcome of things,
what difference does "prayer" make? The answer may not be as
complicated as you think. ... [Read More!]

Reformation Remembered: Do We Need Another?

Yesterday's CrossTalk radio program is now available in the audio archives, and it's one download that you don't want to miss. For Reformation Day 2005, Pastor Rick Phillips discussed Rick Warren's plan and proposal for a new (purpose driven?) Reformation based on "deeds" rather than "creeds". Pastor Phillips reminds us of what was important about the 16th century Reformation, and how it's beliefs differ from the "therapeutic gospel" that's popular today.... [Read More!]
